An elderly woman quickly demands a divorce from her husband after fifty years of marriage. Later, she gets a letter containing words she had not heard for five decades.

Rose reached her limit. The 75-year-old woman married Charles over fifty years ago. Charles was ten years her senior, yet they stayed together since college. They spent their young years loving each other. Everyone thought they would never part ways, and so did they.

The couple raised two wonderful children who later started their own families. Despite their full married life, Rose felt trapped. She believed she could not live her life completely. These emotions showed in how she treated Charles.

Charles loved her deeply and always protected her. He became puzzled when she began starting arguments and losing her temper. He noticed she was shutting her heart to him. Charles decided to talk with her, hoping they could make peace.

That day he found her talking to herself. "What troubles you, dear?" he asked. "You speak to yourself again."

"This happens because of you, Charles," she replied sharply. "You make me lose my mind slowly."

"Please Rose, do not speak such words to me. They hurt my heart."

"You always act like the victim," Rose responded angrily before leaving the room. Charles stayed behind, trying to understand her meaning.

The fights happened so often that Charles chose not to resist when Rose finally asked for a divorce. Both were old, and the stress harmed them. They told their lawyer, Mr. Frank Evans, about their plan. He tried to stop them because he thought they made a great pair.

Rose refused to change her mind. Charles did not want to cause Rose to suffer, so he agreed to the divorce.

On the day they signed the documents, Frank suggested they share a meal at their favorite restaurant. "What harm could it cause?" he said.

Rose hesitated, but Charles accepted right away. "We would not mind, Frank," he said. "We part as friends. This could be our final meal together."

Rose finally agreed, and they went to the restaurant.

Frank ordered his food when they arrived and told the older couple he would cover their meals too. The waiter came to take their orders. Charles quickly took control. He asked for dimmed lighting around their table because of his former wife and ordered a salad for her while choosing steak for himself.

Rose felt angry inside. She could not believe Charles ordered her food as if she was not there and could not choose for herself. Other customers near their table complained about the dim lights. This made her even more upset. Rose was a quiet woman who disliked being the focus of attention. Her anger made her snap at Charles before she left. Frank and Charles watched her walk away.

"Women, right?" Frank said with a knowing expression.

"I understand," Charles answered with a sad smile on his face.

Charles came home to find Rose gone along with many of her things. This broke his heart because he did not know what caused her change.

Both slept poorly that night. Charles gave up trying to sleep and decided to write his former wife a letter as his final attempt to save their marriage. He poured all his feelings into the letter. He cried while writing because he knew life would be different without his dear Rose.

Morning arrived, and he realized he did not know her location. He could not send the letter. Charles left it on the shelf and noticed some medicine Rose needed to take daily for her health condition. She had left it behind, but he knew she required it. He picked up his phone to call her.

Rose refused to answer his calls. She thought he wanted to bother her to come back to him. "We spent many years together and raised children, but he barely understands me," she thought as the phone rang. "He only tries to control me, and I am finished with that. Now I will live and do what I want with my freedom."

Charles felt bitter when no one answered his calls.

This fear combined with concern for her safety overwhelmed his fragile heart. He began experiencing heart attack symptoms. Charles quickly called for an ambulance but lost consciousness before it arrived.

Police contacted Frank, who then called Rose to inform her. The news made her heart skip. Her Charles was lying in the hospital? She could not stand the idea of losing him. This realization showed her how much she still cared for him.

Rose went to their home to collect items for him. She discovered the letter there. Reading it broke her heart.

"Dear Rose," it started. "I want you to know I have loved you all these years and will love you until I die. I do not understand why you decided to close your heart to me, but I wish you would open it again. I cannot picture a world where we live apart."

Rose began crying as she continued reading.

"I apologize for what occurred at the restaurant. I only tried to protect you as I always have. I know you dislike bright lights because they pain your eyes, so I requested dimmed lighting. I also understand your health problems, which is why I chose salad for you. I am sorry for taking such actions and promise to improve if you come back to me."

The remaining part of the letter made Rose understand how mistaken she had been. She decided right then to become a better wife to her husband. Rose rushed to the hospital where she reunited with him and pleaded to cancel the divorce. She suddenly recognized how caring he was with her and chose to return that kindness every day until her last breath.

Lessons from this story:

  • Do not ignore someone you love because you will feel sorry if you lose them. Rose ignored Charles' phone calls because she felt angry with him. She understood how much she would miss him when she almost lost him.
  • Do not make choices when feelings run high. Rose chose divorce while feeling angry with Charles. This started events that nearly killed him. Fortunately, he survived long enough for her to see her error and fix it.
