When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step back from their royal responsibilities and relocate to the sunny shores of California, leaving the United Kingdom behind, the late Queen Elizabeth specifically requested that they refrain from using the “Sussex Royal” name since they were no longer serving as active members of the monarchy.

At that point, both their Instagram account and official website carried the name “Sussex Royal.” However, after welcoming their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in 2019, the couple began adopting the name “Archewell” for their website and production ventures, paying tribute to their firstborn child through the new branding.

Later, after King Charles’ official coronation, Harry and Meghan made a notable decision regarding their children’s identities. They chose to update Archie and Lilibet’s surnames, opting to officially have them known by the family name “Sussex.”

Prince Harry was granted the title Duke of Sussex on his wedding day to Meghan, which took place in May 2018.

When Archie was born, he was not awarded a royal title due to traditional protocols that limited titles to the grandchildren of the reigning monarch, and only through the direct male line.

Nevertheless, after Queen Elizabeth’s death and King Charles ascending to the throne, the circumstances changed. Both Archie and Lilibet became eligible for, and were subsequently bestowed, the titles of Prince and Princess. Harry and Meghan decided that their children would officially use these royal designations.

In a recent event, The Office actress Mindy Kaling mistakenly referred to Meghan by her maiden name, Markle. Meghan quickly corrected her.

“You keep saying ‘Meghan Markle,’ but I’m Sussex now,” Meghan pointed out. “Once you have children, you realize how important it is to share a family name with them. I hadn’t expected it to feel so significant, but it means everything to call it ‘our family name, our little family name.’”

Now that Archie and Lilibet have transitioned from using Mountbatten-Windsor to adopting Sussex as their last name, the public reaction has been mixed, and in some circles, critical.

One individual remarked online, “Rather than endlessly rebranding, I’d like to see them achieve something substantial. It’s all image with very little substance—quite disheartening, really.”

Another critic commented, “For someone who claimed to want distance from the royal family, he certainly appears to be keeping one foot firmly planted within it.”

A third person harshly added, “This couple will do anything to stay in the public eye—absolute hypocrites. They wanted privacy but seem to go to great lengths to stay in the headlines.”

In addition to the name change for their children, Harry and Meghan also rebranded their personal website, now known simply as Sussex.com.

According to sources close to the couple, they believe this new identity will serve to bring unity to their growing family and better represent their shared future.

Despite facing criticism, Harry and Meghan continue to focus on carving out a new path for themselves and their children, one that honors their family bond while maintaining their public platform.
