When Eric requested to cover our first date, I believed I had encountered a real gentleman. Flowers, a thoughtful present, charming dialogue — he was meeting all expectations. When he messaged me the following day, I expected a lovely response, but my heart sank when I opened his text.

My closest friend, Mia, had good intentions when she offered to arrange a date for me, but her matchmaking abilities were completely untested.

"He's really sweet, Kelly! Complete gentleman. You'll adore him," Mia declared over the phone while I searched through my wardrobe.

"You've never matched me up before," I pointed out. "What makes you believe you understand my preferences?"

"Because I understand you better than anyone," she answered cheerfully. "Also, Chris supports him too. They've been companions for years."

That made me pause. Chris, Mia's partner, was a fairly good judge of people. If he considered this Eric person decent, perhaps there was potential.

"Alright," I exhaled. "Send me a photo at least."

A moment later, my phone chimed with a new message.

The person in the image wasn't unattractive: neat appearance, nicely dressed, with a genuine smile that lit up his face.

"Fine, he's handsome," I admitted.

"See!" Mia exclaimed. "Message him and arrange it. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee."

After several relaxed messages, I decided to meet Eric for dinner at a new Italian restaurant with a beautiful river view. Nothing too fancy, but pleasant enough for a first meeting.

I showed up five minutes early and stood near the door, as we had planned. I was nervously checking my reflection with my phone camera when I noticed him walking toward the restaurant.

My heart beat faster. The photo had been accurate — he was good-looking in that polished, professional way, and he moved with self-assurance.

What I hadn't expected was the flower bouquet in his grasp.

Not inexpensive supermarket flowers, but an actual florist arrangement wrapped with a ribbon.

"You must be Kelly," he said. "These are for you."

"Oh, thank you," I responded. "You didn't need to do that."

"Thought I'd start the evening properly," he said.

But that wasn't everything.

He reached into his coat pocket and produced a small gift box wrapped with a blue bow.

"What's this?" I inquired.

"Just a small token. Open it," he encouraged.

Inside was a polished silver keychain with the letter "K" carved on it. It was elegant and personalized, something that showed consideration.

"Something made just for you," he said. "I asked Mia what you might enjoy."

I was genuinely touched. Flowers and a considerate gift on a first meeting? This person was clearly making an effort. Either he was genuinely interested, or he was the master of first impressions.

"This is very thoughtful of you," I said. "Thank you."

Eric maintained his courteous behavior flawlessly. He held the door open, seated me at the table, and maintained consistent eye contact during our discussion.

"So what convinced you to accept this arrangement?" he inquired after we had placed our food orders.

"Mia can be quite convincing," I chuckled. "Also, she and Chris both recommended you, which seldom occurs."

"They make a wonderful pair," he agreed.

"Chris and I have known each other since university. He's always been a reliable person."

The discussion flowed smoothly from that point.

We discovered mutual interests in crime podcasts and films about unusual communities.

He shared funny tales about his position as a marketing supervisor, and I found myself believing this could be the finest first meeting I'd experienced.

The bill arrived, and I grabbed my wallet.

"Definitely not," Eric declared.

"A gentleman covers the first meeting."

His voice surprised me slightly. It wasn't simply polite, but decisive, almost as if he was stating an unchangeable law.

I hesitated for a moment, then smiled. "Alright, if you demand it. Thank you."

I wouldn't dispute a complimentary dinner, particularly after such an enjoyable evening. We departed together, and he inquired if he could contact me again shortly.

"I would enjoy that," I answered.

He embraced me farewell (a perfect mix of warm and interested without being uncomfortable).

The following morning, I awakened to a message from Eric. My drowsy mind expected a sweet "enjoyed our time" text, but instead, I discovered an attachment.

I prepared coffee and returned to my room. Intrigued, I accessed it, anticipating perhaps a picture from the dining establishment or something equally innocent.

At the header, in bold business font:

Date Night Invoice – Outstanding Payment Due.

Below it was a comprehensive list of services rendered with matching costs.

Initially, I thought it was a joke, some odd attempt at comedy that missed its mark. But as I continued reading, my morning coffee nearly returned.

The supposed services he documented were completely ridiculous, and it made me view his polite behavior in an entirely different light.

Rose Bouquet: One Embrace

Personalized Keychain Gift: one coffee meeting (scheduled within seven days)

Opening the vehicle door: A nice photo together.

Seating at the Table: Hand holding on the following meeting.

Stimulating Discussion & Attentive Listening: A compliment about my looks

Complete Meal + Gratuity Paid: A second meeting with no cancellations.

But the true surprise, the part that made me understand he'd submitted this bill seriously, appeared at the end in bold letters.

Payment is expected completely. No returns. Failure to fulfill may result in an overdue balance being forwarded to debt collection (Chris will be informed).

Anticipating your swift payment!

My mouth dropped open.

It would have been terrible enough if he'd expected financial payment, but demanding me to provide mandatory affection and attention? Who behaves like that?

I captured the invoice instantly and forwarded it to Mia. Her reply came quickly.

"OH. MY. GOD. I'M DISPLAYING THIS TO CHRIS RIGHT NOW."

"Is this actually happening???" I messaged back. "He's genuinely serious about this!"

"Wait until Chris views this. He's going to EXPLODE," she responded.

Five minutes passed, then my phone buzzed.

It was Chris, and he was roaring with laughter.

"Kelly, I cannot believe this," he said. "I've known this guy for years and never, not once, did I imagine he'd attempt something this crazy."

"So, this isn't a prank?" I inquired.

"No chance," Chris responded. "Eric's always been somewhat... obsessive about dating, but this is extreme. Alright, we need to respond to this guy."

Chris was the architect of ultimate revenge.

Rather than simply mocking Eric in their group chat, he decided to escalate it further.

"I'm creating an identical invoice," he declared. "Same structure, fake professional language, absurd charges, everything."

Service Invoice – Amount Owed: A Lifetime of Silence

Introducing You to a Beautiful Woman: 1 permanent block on all social media

Persuading Her You Were a Gentleman: A deep, personal examination of why you remain single

Allowing You to Share the Same Table as Her: A formal apology to all women you've previously dated

Payment is required IMMEDIATELY. Failure to comply may result in public embarrassment. Goodbye!

"This is brilliant," I messaged him. "Send it!"

"Delivered!" He responded moments later.

Shortly after, my phone received a stream of increasingly furious messages from Eric.

"Wow, really childish."

"I was simply trying to establish clear boundaries; not everyone has money."

"Chris is a horrible friend."

"You just lost out on an AMAZING guy."

I didn't bother responding. What could I say to someone who believed human relationships operated on a payment system? I simply sent him a thumbs-up emoji and blocked his contact.

Mia phoned me later that evening, still laughing about the entire situation.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "I genuinely believed he was reasonable. Chris didn't know he was like this either."

"Don't stress about it," I said, surprising myself with how calm I felt. "We all gained a fantastic story from it, at least."

"Exactly," she agreed. "This will definitely be shared at every gathering for the next ten years."

The entire experience taught me one important lesson about dating: if a man demands to pay, ensure he doesn't mail you a bill afterward.

What about the keychain, though? I retained it. Not because it reminded me of Eric, but because it was a funny souvenir from the strangest date of my life.
