On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term as President of the United States. Shortly after assuming office, he enacted several executive orders—binding directives to federal agencies that bypass congressional approval. Among these, he announced the nation's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization, stating to an audience in Washington, D.C., his intention to rescind "80 destructive and radical executive actions of the previous administration."

Additionally, President Trump proclaimed a national energy emergency, vowing to replenish strategic petroleum reserves and promote American energy exports. He asserted, "We will be a prosperous nation again, and it is that liquid gold beneath our feet that will help achieve it."

He also declared the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border a national emergency, planning to deploy military personnel to support immigration authorities and limit refugee and asylum entries.

In the realm of foreign policy, during a discussion about NATO members not meeting the 2% GDP defense spending threshold, including Spain, President Trump remarked, "Spain is very low. They're a BRICS nation, Spain. Do you know what a BRICS nation is? You'll figure it out."

However, this statement was incorrect. The BRICS consortium comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—Spain is not part of this group. Furthermore, President Trump proposed imposing "at least a 100 percent tariff on the business they do with the United States," a move that could potentially end decades of free trade between the countries.

Spanish government spokesperson Minister Pilar Alegría responded to President Trump's error, stating, "I don't know if the statement made by President Trump was the result of a mix-up or not, but I can confirm that Spain is not in BRICS."
