Donald Trump’s sharp 8 word response to anyone who regrets voting for him
Donald Trump celebrated his first 100 days back in the White House with his typical showmanship, while delivering a stern message to backers, justifying his tough trade battles that are making daily life costlier for numerous Americans.
During August 2024, Trump assured the public that living expenses would decrease under his leadership.
"After winning, I will quickly reduce prices, beginning immediately on day one," Trump stated in a campaign address last August. Speaking about increasing local oil production, CNN notes he also stated, "We will extract oil aggressively."
'America First'
Since returning to presidential duties approximately 100 days ago, Trump enacted the America First Trade Policy, an initiative designed to lessen the "country's reliance on foreign nations," and remove "harmful trade imbalances" by gathering "import fees, taxes, and additional foreign commerce-related income."
Proceeding with this plan, the President declared on April 2 a 10% import tax on most nations, alongside higher rates scheduled to begin July 9, unless individual trade deals are reached.
The President has also set 25% import taxes on vehicles, steel and aluminum, 25% charges on Canadian and Mexican goods, and 145% fees on Chinese products, which U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calls "similar to a complete ban."
China responded by raising its fees on American items to 125% and The European Union is preparing counter-actions, Reuters states.
'Taking advantage of us'
In conversation with ABC's Terry Moran, Trump defended the disputed taxes on many Chinese imports, from metal and technology to playthings and home products, rejecting claims it would "increase costs on everything from devices to apparel to constructing homes."
"That's positive...they merit it," the President remarked, adding that price increases remain uncertain. Presenting the decision as a loyal stand against financial exploitation, he added, "China will likely absorb these taxes. But at 145, they basically cannot conduct much business with the United States. They were exploiting us like no one ever has.
"Also, we have other countries that were equally bad...Nearly every country globally was exploiting us."
But China won't accept losses without transferring costs to Americans. According to Reuters, a Chinese foreign ministry representative indicated that Beijing's "stance against U.S. misuse of import taxes remains unchanged," suggesting the commercial conflict will only grow worse.
'Nation is thriving'
Now, barely 100 days since Trump returned to leadership, the actual effects of his worldwide trade disputes are affecting Americans directly.
Claiming his policies are boosting the U.S. economy, and rejecting suggestions of financial pressure on citizens, the President bragged that the "nation is thriving" since his return to office 100 days earlier.
'Years of trade mistreatment'
"We have endured trade abuse from other nations for decades. They mocked us. They believed we were foolish individuals, but we are correcting this," Trump explained to Moran during the April 29 discussion. "Our progress is excellent. Our situation is very good. You will see the actual figures released in about six months from now."
'Mocked by others'
Challenging him directly, Moran highlighted the "damage to reputation" during his presidency, noting that Canadians feel "extremely upset, enraged" about Trump's claims regarding control over their nation.
"That's their choice," he responded, claiming he has "performed remarkably well" and is "restoring American greatness."
"I believe our standing has improved significantly, and we are a respected nation again. The world ridiculed us before. We had a leader who could not climb stairs, could not descend stairs, could not cross a platform without stumbling. We had a leader who was utterly ineffective," he stated.
Conflicts with election pledge
What has "increased considerably" under Trump's administration is the expense of living.
Studies show that the President's America First Trade Policy will add costs between $4,000 to nearly $8,000 for each American household – mainly because of higher prices on foreign products, including electronics and toys, clothing to vehicles and basic food items.
"Citizens are concerned, including some who voted for you, saying, 'This isn't what I agreed to.' How do you address these worries?" Moran questioned the President.
Trump answered, "They actually did agree to it. This was my campaign message. I explained that other countries have exploited us at unprecedented levels..."
Trump also guaranteed lower prices.
Refusing to admit he failed to keep this promise, he insisted: "I have delivered."
'Frightening' and 'disorderly'
Nevertheless, Americans are experiencing strain under his leadership.
According to joint research by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos, the President faces the worst 100-day approval score of any U.S. president in eight decades, with 55% disapproving of Trump's job performance in his second term.
At the same time, a different New York Times/Siena College survey reveals only 42% of participants approve of his actions thus far, with most describing his presidency as "frightening" and "disorderly."
Despite the aggressive policies and attention-grabbing headlines, it seems many voters feel more instability than success.
