Ivanka Trump faces backlash for Audrey Hepburn-inspired ball gown
Ivanka Trump faced backlash from some individuals regarding her attire at the Liberty Inaugural Ball, held in Washington, D.C., on Monday.
Unless you've been entirely disconnected from recent events, you're likely aware that Ivanka's father, the ever-controversial and always headline-grabbing Donald Trump, was inaugurated earlier this week. The occasion marked the start of Trump's second term as President of the United States, following his initial tenure from 2017 to 2021.
As expected, nearly every detail of Trump’s inauguration was analyzed and dissected by people across the internet. Since the event, discussions have emerged about topics such as Elon Musk’s alleged “Nazi salute,” Melania Trump’s choice of hat, and amateur lip-readers speculating on Barron Trump’s conversation with Joe Biden.
In short, very little escaped scrutiny during the inauguration, and even something as seemingly innocent as a dress managed to spark heated online discussions.
The outfit in question was worn by Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, who served as an advisor during her father’s first presidential term.
Let’s take a moment to state the obvious: no one should ever face criticism for their wardrobe choices (barring extreme exceptions, of course).
Nevertheless, the internet, being what it is, tends to amplify opinions—often disregarding civility, ethics, or common sense. Celebrities, in particular, are almost always subjected to judgment regarding their appearances, fashion, behaviors, and mannerisms.
This time, Ivanka found herself on the receiving end of criticism for her choice of gown at the Liberty Ball. Drawing inspiration from one of the most iconic women of the 20th century, Ivanka donned a reimagined version of the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1954 film Sabrina.
The original dress, designed by Hubert de Givenchy, is instantly recognizable and remains a timeless design. Ivanka’s rendition—a white gown with black floral embroidery and a short train—was reportedly created by the French fashion house Givenchy as well.
She completed the ensemble with elbow-length black opera gloves, stiletto heels, a diamond choker, and a chignon hairstyle—details that closely mirrored Hepburn’s iconic look.

Though Ivanka undoubtedly made a striking appearance in the gown, as is often the case in today’s world, some individuals seized the opportunity to critique her.
“The more I analyze the details, the more ridiculous it seems,” one critical commenter remarked.
Another wrote, “The texture and embroidery on Ivanka’s version feel exaggerated and lack the refinement. No one compares to Hepburn.”
A third person criticized the connection to Hepburn, stating, “Audrey Hepburn would curse them all. She survived World War II and fought against everything the Trump family represents, only for her dress to be used like this. Completely disgraceful.”
“Audrey would have despised Ivanka and her family,” another added.
Of course, this only highlights one side of the debate. There were also many who praised Ivanka’s elegance and choice of attire for the occasion.
Meanwhile, Audrey Hepburn’s son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, commented on the matter, expressing understanding of Ivanka’s homage to his mother.
“It’s no surprise that, growing up in a household where our mother was a household name, Ivanka would draw inspiration from her. She embodies the ultimate reference for elegance and class, and this occasion—the inauguration, the 32nd anniversary of our mother’s passing, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day—made it an even more fitting tribute,” he told The Daily Mail. “What a mix!”
Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, have already stated that they will not be returning to White House roles during Donald Trump’s second term.
